Food groups classification. NUTRITIONISTS article.

The classification of food groups may be appropriate in a particular country or in certain circumstances , it is not necessarily the most appropriate for every situation or region. There is no better than other classification, what different needs, customs, resources , the availability and therefore different ways of grouping them.

Foods are classified into groups and there are several types of them . For a proper classification is also required :


a) That this classification has been made ​​logically.


b ) The group must contains elements with similar attributes so that nothing is outside .


c ) Be ordered so that the item can only be classified in one category and not in two or three at the same time .


d ) Ensure that any kind runs out elements.


We'll start by saying that there are three food groups, grouped by nutrient content contributors (similar chemical composition) , plus each group has a different color for easy identification .


GROUP 1. CEREALS AND TUBERS:

■ Foods from this group are the basis of food, ie , must be the most abundant in food.
■ They provide mainly carbohydrates.
■ Carbohydrates provide us the energy needed to perform daily activities.
■ They contain lots of fiber, wholegrain and refined.
■ Among cereals are maize ( corn , popcorn, cornmeal , tamales , tortillas ) , wheat (varieties of bread : sliced ​​bread, ciabatta, roll, bun, biscuits, pasta, flour tortilla .. ) cereal box, amaranth, rice, oats, barley, rye, bran. While the tubers : potato, sweet potato, cassava ..

GROUP II. VEGETABLES AND FRUITS

■ This group provides the body with vitamins, inorganic nutrients ( minerals) and fiber.
■ They mainly provide  simple carbohydrates or short-term energy . ( rapid digestion and absorption) .
■ Involved in the development and functioning of almost all body parts like eyes , blood , bones , gums, and skin, among others.
■ They give color and texture to our daily diet.
■ Some fruits are: cherimoya , mamey , sapodilla , soursop , mango , apple, pear, banana , peach , kiwi, oranges, tangerines , prunes , guava , figs , tuna , raisins , prunes, Granada or Chinese red , apricot , lime , strawberries , grapes, raspberries, jicama * , pineapple , tamarind , blackberry, wild cherry , melon papaya and watermelon.
■ Some vegetables are: spinach , celery , artichokes , beets * , eggplant , watercress, broccoli, squash , onions , peas , chilacayote , chilli variety , cilantro , cabbage , Brussels sprouts , cauliflower , green beans , asparagus , spinach, squash blossoms , sprouts, mushrooms variety huazontle , tomato , lettuce, cactus , palm , cucumber , parsley , pepper, leek, quelite radish romerito , tomato, purslane, and carrot xoconostle * .

      * Remember that food classification presented is grouped in terms of their chemical composition contained in the food, the latter not included if it grows on tree , bush or under the earth .


 GROUP III. PULSES AND ANIMAL FOOD

■ They mainly provide  proteins.
■ They are forming foods , they repaired or replenished different tissues such as muscle, skin, blood, hair, bones , nails, allowing further growth and development of the organism .
■ allow muscle contraction and help fight infections.
■ Foods of animal origin are sources of cholesterol : All types of meat including seafood , milk, dairy products, and eggs.
■ Legumes are seeds that come from plants with pods and are all kinds of beans, lentils, alverjon , chickpeas and soybeans.
■ Oil ( seeds) among which are olive, almond , sesame , hazelnut, peanut , sunflower seeds and seed , nut and sprocket are included in this group. Even that they are very oily, they contain a large amount of vegetable protein.

      ACCESSORY GROUP FATS AND SUGARS

■ This group is not essential as the case of the groups above.
■ Considered an accessory group for food because these foods are used only to give better taste, plus they provide lots of calories to the diet.
■ The most common fats are generally oils, lard, butter, margarine, mayonnaise, cream, bacon, sausage, pork, among others.
■ The sugars are in jam, honey, caramel, gelatin, soda, table sugar, candy, among many others.

Now that you know the food groups, it is important that foods are varied by the same group and combine foods from the different groups , including at least one of each food in each meal . Following these steps will achieve your diet is correct.
